1. the things I should have said
I believe in you. Bending is overrated. You will get it. I like knives, too. Don’t listen! Stand up. Keep going. I want to be just like her when I grow up. I’m not afraid. Why does it scare you? Fight! I miss you. I want to see you again. I’m sorry.
3. the weight of the world
She wonders sometimes what he will look like when he is old. She is certain he will be more wizened and wrinkled than any of the other men in his family. He takes everything so seriously. The crease in his brows will be permanent before the first silver strand appears in his dark hair.
She smoothes it in her imagination, with her lips, with her fingers, thinking perhaps it’s already permanent. She wishes she could tell him to relax, but she realizes full well that if he did, everything really would fall apart. At least everything he ever cared about.
5. on the nightstand
He sets the last black ribbon aside and buries his hands in gallons of ink, and she gives him a bemused stare. “It’s just hair, Zuko.”
“Shut up,” he growls.
He’s more gentle with the brush than her mother was when she was a child.
7. next to mine
His lips are curved, his eyes lit from within, bemused, and she arches an eyebrow at him. His hand waves vaguely in the direction of their massed weaponry beside their clothes, his swords so much bigger than her daggers, shuriken, crossbow bolts and arrows, but so clearly outnumbered.
She takes this in silently for a few moments while he slips out of his shirt and sits beside her on the bed. Her head tilts quizzically to one side, her cheeks flushing faintly in surprise at the smile that tugs sharply at her own lips, until his arm is around her waist and his tongue grazes her shoulder.
